Inflation 0.9 per cent in February

The year-on-year change in consumer prices, i.e. inflation, calculated by Statistics Finland was 0.9 per cent in February. In January it was 0.8 per cent.

Consumer prices were pushed up most in the year by higher prices of liquid fuels. Risen prices of dwellings, increased restaurant prices and higher public transport prices and risen rents also had an impact on inflation. The rise of consumer prices was curbed most by lower telephone charges and fallen prices of vegetables and private cars from the year before.

From January to February, consumer prices rose by 0.8 per cent, which was principally due to the ending of clothes sales and higher prices of vegetables, dwellings and fuels.

Each mid-month, Statistics Finland interviewers collect around 50,000 prices on 497 commodities from approximately 3,500 outlets for the Consumer Price Index. In addition, some 1,000 items of price data are gathered by centralised collection.

Consumer Price Index revised

The commodity basket and weight structure of the Consumer Price Index were revised to correspond to the consumption structure of the year 2005. The first new index, Consumer Price Index 2005=100, for February 2006 was released on 17 February 2006 at 10 am.
