Inflation 2.2 per cent in December

The year-on-year change in consumer prices, i.e. inflation, calculated by Statistics Finland was 2.2 per cent in December. In November it stood at 2.1 per cent. In 2006 the average inflation was 1.6 per cent.

During the year, consumer prices were pushed up most (1.2 percentage points) by higher prices of housing, which were primarily due to increases in housing loan interest rates, higher prices of dwellings and electricity and rent increases. Increases in the prices of food and higher consumer credit interest rates also had an impact on inflation. In December inflation was curbed most by reductions in the prices of entertainment electronics and home computers, clothing and refundable prescription medicines from the year before.

From November to December, consumer prices rose by 0.1 per cent.

Each mid-month, Statistics Finland interviewers collect around 60,000 prices on 497 commodities from approximately 3,500 outlets for the Consumer Price Index. In addition, some 1,000 items of price data are gathered by centralised collection.
