Inflation accelerated to 2.6 per cent in September
The year-on-year change in consumer prices, i.e. inflation, calculated by Statistics Finland was 2.6 per cent in September. In August it stood at 2.3 per cent. Inflation was accelerated above all by risen prices of liquid fuels from September of the previous year.
Consumer prices were pushed up most in the year by increased cost of housing. Housing prices were put up primarily by risen housing loan interest rates, prices of owner-occupied flats, real estate and renovation, as well as rent increases. Risen phone call charges, interest rates on consumer credits, food prices and running costs of vehicles also had an impact on inflation. Fallen prices of entertainment electronics, computers and used passenger cars, in turn, curbed the rise in consumer prices most in September.
From August to September, consumer prices went up by 0.5 per cent.
Each mid-month, Statistics Finland interviewers collect around 60,000 prices on 497 commodities from approximately 2,700 outlets for the Consumer Price Index. In addition, some 1,000 items of price data are gathered by centralised collection.
