Consumption of hard coal decreased by 39 per cent during the first quarter

Approximately 1.1 million tonnes (26,000 TJ) of hard coal were consumed as fuel in the generation of electricity and heat in the January to March period of 2008. The consumption fell by 39 per cent from the corresponding period of the previous year and was almost as much, that is, 37 per cent below the average for the 2000s. Use of hard coal decreased both in separate production of electricity and in combined heat and power production. The reasons for the reduced consumption were ample production of hydro power in the Nordic countries and milder weather than in the year before. The second EU emissions trading period began at the start of the year.
