Free-time residences in Finland numbered 478,000 in 2007

According to Statistics Finland, there were 478,306 free-time residences in Finland at the end of 2007. The region with the highest number of free-time residences was Varsinais-Suomi which had around 47,700 of them. Pirkanmaa and Etelä-Savo also had more than 40,000 free-time residences. The regions of Åland and Central Ostrobothnia had the lowest numbers of free-time residences. The municipality with the highest number of free-time residences was Kuusamo which had over 6,000 of them. Mikkeli, Kuopio, Tammisaari and Mäntyharju had the next largest numbers. One-half of the free-time residences have a floor area of 40 square metres of less.

Since 1990, the stock of free-time residences has grown most in the region of Etelä-Savo which had around 10,700 more of them than in 1990. The stock of free-time residences has changed least in Åland where their number has increased by about 1,300 since 1990.

The average age of the owners of new free-time residences completed in 2007 was 53 years, while the average age of all owners of free-time residences was 61 years. Only five per cent of all owners of free-time residences were aged under 40.
