Volume of goods transported by lorries increased in the first quarter of 2010

In the first quarter of 2010, the volume of goods transported by lorries in domestic road transport increased by 26 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2009. A total of 84 million tonnes of goods were transported by lorries during the January to March period of 2010. The strong growth is explained by the transport of soil materials of which a total of 34 million tonnes were transported. However, the volume of transported goods still falls 10 per cent short of the volume of goods transported in the January to March period of 2008. These data derive from the statistics on domestic goods transport by road compiled by Statistics Finland.

Volume of goods transported by lorries by quarter

In the first quarter of 2010, the transport volume of lorries totalled 6,008 million tonne-kilometres, of which 457 million tonne-kilometres were for own account transport and 5,551 million tonne-kilometres for hire or reward transport. The total transport volume of lorries increased in tonne-kilometres by two per cent from the corresponding time period of 2009.
