Goods transported by lorries in domestic transport decreased in January to March 2012

In the first quarter of 2012, the volume of goods transported by lorries in domestic road transport decreased by eight per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2011. A total of 61 million tonnes of goods were transported by lorries during the January to March period of 2012. Thirty-one per cent more of soil materials but 19 per cent less of other materials were transported than in the January to March period of 2011. These data derive from the statistics on goods transport by road compiled by Statistics Finland.

In the first quarter of 2012, the transport performance of lorries totalled 4,945 million tonne-kilometres, of which 326 million tonne-kilometres were in private transport and 4,619 million tonne-kilometres in professional transport. The transport performance decreased by 15 per cent from the corresponding period of 2011.

The data for the statistics on goods transport by road are collected from lorry owners with a quarterly sample survey. Transported volume of goods refers to the weight of goods loaded on lorries in tonnes. Tonne-kilometre describes the volume of transport and is obtained as a product of transported volume of goods and length of transport journey.
