Volume of goods transported by lorries grew in the third quarter of 2014

A total of 77 million tonnes of goods were transported by lorries in the third quarter of 2014, which was 11 per cent more than in the corresponding quarter of 2013. The volume of transported soil materials increased by 23 per cent and the volume of transport for other goods grew by one per cent compared to the corresponding quarter of 2013. These data derive from the statistics on goods transport by road compiled by Statistics Finland.

Volume of goods transported by lorries by quarter of year

The total transport volume of lorries amounted to 5.2 billion tonne-kilometres in the third quarter of 2014, which was seven per cent more than in the corresponding quarter of one year before. Ninety-two per cent of the transport volume was transported in professional transport and eight per cent in private transport.

The data for the statistics on goods transport by road are collected from lorry owners with a quarterly sample survey. Transported volume of goods refers to the weight of goods loaded on lorries in tonnes. Tonne-kilometre describes the volume of transport and is obtained as a product of transported volume of goods and length of transport journey.
