Volume of goods transported by lorries increased slightly in the third quarter of 2020

A total of 69 million tonnes of goods were transported by lorries during the third quarter of 2020, which was 4 per cent more than in the corresponding period one year earlier. The volume of transported soil materials increased by 5 per cent and the volume of transport of other goods increased by 3 per cent compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year. These data derive from the statistics on goods transport by road compiled by Statistics Finland.

In the third quarter of 2019, the total transport volume of lorries amounted to 6,7 billion tonne-kilometres, which was 6 per cent more than in the corresponding period one year earlier. Ninety-six per cent of the transport volume was transported in professional transport and 4 per cent in private transport.

The data for the statistics on goods transport by road are collected from lorry owners with a quarterly sample survey. Transported volume of goods refers to the weight of goods loaded on lorries in tonnes. Tonne-kilometre describes the volume of transport and is obtained as a product of transported volume of goods and length of transport journey.
