The data collection and production processes for the statistics on goods transport by road revised

The data collection and production processes of domestic and international transport performances for the statistics on goods transport by road have been combined.

In addition to the combining, the sam-pling design of the statistics on goods transport by road was revised so that the design has eight strata in place of the previous six ones. The total weight category adopted as the new stratum criterion was: 3.5 to 6.0 tonnes for lorries registered for both private and professional transport. At the same time, the sample size was changed, as previously the sample contained yearly 8,400 lorries and an additional 2,400 enterprises with a licence entitling them to engage in international transport, that is, a community transport licence. Now the sample includes 10,000 lorries per year.

The length of the monitoring period was also changed: previously the length of the monitoring period was two days for domestic transport and one to two weeks for international transport. Now the length of the monitoring period is three to four days. Combining data collections lowers considerably the response burden of data providers and improves the quality of the statistics.
