Vehicle stock grew by 3,6 per cent in 2009

At the end of 2009, the Finnish vehicle register contained 5,128,067 vehicles, of which 3,246,414 were automobiles. Automobiles accounted for 63.3 per cent of all registered vehicles. The total number of vehicles grew by 3.6 per cent and that of automobiles by 3.1 per cent from the year-end situation of 2008. These data, complied by Statistics Finland, are based on the Vehicular and Driver Data Register of the Finnish Transport Safety Agency and the vehicle register of Ålands Motorfordonsbyrå. At the end of 2009, the vehicle register of Åland Islands contained around 36,000 vehicles.

At year-end 2009, there were 2,776,664 registered passenger cars in Finland. The stock of passenger cars grew by 2.8 per cent during the year. Examined by region, the growth in the number of passenger cars was largest, or 4.0 per cent, in Åland and smallest, or 1.5 per cent, in Itä-Uusimaa. The whole country considered, the biggest relative increases in numbers of registrations were recorded for mopeds (up by 10.6 %) and buses and coaches (6.0 %). Relative growths of under 5 per cent were recorded in the numbers of agricultural tractors, snowmobiles and trailers.
