Vehicle stock grew in 2021
At the end of 2021, the Finnish vehicle register contained 7,040,869 vehicles, of which 5,218,677 were in traffic use. The total number of registered vehicles grew by 1.7 per cent and the number of vehicles in traffic use grew by 0.9 per cent compared with the situation at the end of 2020. At the end of 2021, the vehicle register of the Åland Islands contained 52,197 vehicles. These data, compiled by Statistics Finland, are based on the traffic affairs register of the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) and the vehicle register of Ålands Fordonsmyndigheten.
At the end of 2021, there were 3,667,164 passenger cars in the register, of which 2,780,981 were in traffic use. The number of registered passenger cars went up by 0.9 per cent and the number of passenger cars in traffic by 0.3 per cent. The number of registered passenger cars was growing most in the region of Uusimaa. Correspondingly, the largest decrease was in South Karelia.
Vehicle stock 1980–2021
In 2021, a total of 98,484 new passenger cars were first registered in Mainland Finland and 45,367 used passenger cars were imported to Finland. A total of 97,243 passenger cars were removed from the register. The average age of registered passenger cars in Mainland Finland was 16 years and that of cars in traffic use was 12.6 years. The lowest average age of registered passenger cars was 13.2 years in the region of Uusimaa and highest 18.4 years in the region of Kainuu.
At the end of 2021, there were 23,497 electric passenger cars and 78,473 plug-in hybrid electric cars. The number of electric cars grew by 136 per cent and that of plug-in hybrid electric cars by 69 per cent from the previous year. The combined share of electric cars and plug-in hybrid electric cars was 2.8 per cent of all passenger cars in the register.
The most common models of passenger cars in the register of Mainland Finland were Toyota Corolla (around 157,000), Volkswagen Golf (about 129,000) and Skoda Octavia (approx. 93,000).
