Number of building permits granted for dwellings remained on level with 2008 last year

In 2009, building permits were granted for a total of around 27,000 new dwellings, which is roughly on level with the year before. However, the number of dwellings in blocks of flats grew by nearly one-quarter from the year before. By contrast, the number of building permit granted for detached houses fell by almost one-fifth and those for terraced houses by one-quarter from twelve months back.

During last year, building permits were granted for a total of 40 million cubic metres which is 20 per cent less than during 2008. Cubic volumes went down in all building types apart from public service buildings.

In December 2009, building permits were granted for 3.6 million cubic metres, which is two per cent less than one year previously. By contrast, the number of dwellings having received a building permit almost doubled from December 2008.
