Road traffic accidents claimed 22 lives in December

According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 465 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in December. In them, 22 persons were killed and 609 persons injured. The number of persons killed was 6 lower and that of persons injured 2 lower than in December 2008.

Of the persons who were killed, 14 travelled by passenger car and 2 by van. Pedestrians killed in road traffic accidents numbered 4 and cyclists 2. Among those who died, 11 were men and 11 were women.

A total of 6 407 road traffic accidents involving personal injury happened in the January to December period. In them, 281 persons were killed and 8 048 persons injured. The number of persons killed was 62 lower and that of persons injured 426 lower than in the corresponding period of 2008. Of the person who were killed, 168 travelled by passenger car, 11 by van, 6 by lorry, 1 by bus or coach, 27 by motorcycle and 10 by moped. Pedestrians killed numbered 28 and cyclists 21. In addition, 9 other road users were killed.
