Road traffic accidents claimed 27 lives in May

According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 582 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in May. In them, 27 persons were killed and 723 persons injured. The number of persons killed was 6 higher and that of persons injured 35 higher than in May 2010.

Of the persons who were killed, 16 travelled by passenger car, 1 by van, 1 by lorry, 3 by motorcycle and 2 by moped. Pedestrians killed in road traffic accidents numbered 2 and cyclists 1. In addition, 1 other road user was killed. Among those who died, 23 were men and 4 were women.

A total of 2,029 road traffic accidents involving personal injury happened in the January to May period. In them, 90 persons were killed and 2,609 persons injured. The number of persons killed was 4 lower and that of persons injured 175 higher than in the corresponding period of 2010. Of the person who were killed, 65 travelled by passenger car, 3 by van, 3 by lorry, 3 by motorcycle and 2 by moped. Pedestrians killed numbered 9 and cyclists 3. In addition, 2 other road users were killed.
