Industrial output grew by 21.5 per cent year-on-year in June

According to Statistics Finland, seasonally adjusted industrial output was 21.5 per cent higher in June 2006 than in June 2005. Industrial output has grown strongly in the early part of the year. In the January to June period, seasonally adjusted industrial output grew by 9.5 per cent from twelve months back.

Industrial output went up in all the examined main industries in June. The industrial action in the paper industry that coincided with May-June of the previous year can be seen in the figures for industrial output in June 2006. Among the main industries, the biggest year-on-year increase in output in June was, indeed, recorded in the wood and paper industry, where the growth from June 2005 amounted to good 200 per cent. Energy supply also grew by 45 per cent from twelve months back. Output in the chemical industry went up by nearly 10 per cent. In other metal industry output increased by good 7 per cent from one year ago. Manufacture of electrical and electronic products grew by close on 7 per cent.

The growth in Finnish industrial output accelerated in the early part of the year. Industrial output now grows faster in Finland than in the EU countries on the average.

Strong growth in output continued in the metal industry. In 2004, the metal industry accounted for 45 per cent of the total value added of Finnish industry. Growth of output continued in the chemical industry, which generated 12 per cent of the total value added. In the wood and paper industry, output turned upwards. The share of the wood and paper industry of the total value added was 15 per cent.

The share of the electronics industry of the total value added was 21 per cent in 2004. Output in the manufacture of electrical and electronic products swung towards growth after mid-2005. In other metal industry, which accounted for 24 per cent of the total value added, output continued to grow steadily in early 2006.
