Industrial output grew by 7.8 per cent last year

According to preliminary data calculated by Statistics Finland industrial output grew by 7.8 per cent in 2006. Industrial output showed strong growth last year. Output last went up by more than this in the record year of 2000.

According to Statistics Finland, seasonally adjusted industrial output was 5.8 per cent higher in December 2006 than in December 2005.

With the exception of the wood and paper industry, output went up in all main industries. The largest growth of nearly 14 per cent was recorded in December in other metal industry. Strong growth also continued in December in the chemical industry, where output went up by good 9 per cent. The prolonged strong growth in energy supply moderated to an increase of just short of 2 per cent. Manufacture of electrical and electronic products only grew by barely one per cent.

After a slight downturn the trend in industrial output began to rise again. Industrial output now grows faster in Finland than in the EU countries on the average.

After a short decline, output in the metal industry continued to grow again towards the end of the year. In 2004, the metal industry accounted for 45 per cent of the total value added of Finnish industry. Slight growth of output continued in the chemical industry. The chemical industry generated 12 per cent of the value added. The trend in the wood and paper industry started to show slight increase towards the end of the year. The share of the wood and paper industry of the total value added was 15 per cent.

The share of the electronics industry of the total value added was 21 per cent in 2004. The trend in the electronics industry turned towards decline in the latter part of the year. In other metal industry, which accounted for 24 per cent of the total value added, output continued to go up steadily.
