Number of call minutes of outgoing calls from local telephone networks fell by a third from the previous year in 2005

In 2005, the number of calls made from local telephone networks in Finland totalled 1.5 billion, which was 28 per cent lower than in 2004. The number of call minutes fell by even more than this. The call minutes of outgoing calls from the local telephone networks numbered barely 7.5 billion in 2005, which was as much as 35 per cent down on the previous year's figure. In recent years, the key features in the development of telecommunications have been a decline in the use of services in the fixed telephone networks and growth in the use of other networks and subscription types. This development continued strong also in 2005. It should be pointed out, however, that these statistics do not cover calls transmitted in IP networks.

At the same time as the outbound call traffic from fixed networks declines, more and more calls are being transmitted in mobile networks. A total of four billion calls were made from mobile phones in Finland in 2005. The number increased by five per cent from 2004, and 2005 was the first year when the number of call minutes from mobile phones exceeded those from local telephone networks. Call minutes from mobile phones totalled 10.8 billion, which was 13 per cent more than in the year before.

The number of sent text messages also continued to grow in 2005. A total of over 2.7* billion of them were sent, averaging 507** messages per subscription, while the respective figures in 2004 were 2.2 billion and 439. The number of sent multimedia messages more than doubled from 2004, and totalled 16 million in 2005.

Despite the high diffusion of mobile phone subscriptions, the number of subscriptions continued to grow even further in 2005. At the end of the year, mobile phone subscriptions numbered nearly 5.4 million. The number grew by eight per cent from 2004. By contrast, the number of fixed telephone subscriptions fell even further during 2005 and at the end of the year they numbered just over 2.1 million.

There were 1.2 million broadband subscriptions in Finland at the end of 2005. During the year, the number went up by more than 50 per cent from the end of 2004. The transmission speed of 29 per cent of the subscriptions was 2 Mbps or higher; 19 per cent had a transmission speed of at least 2 Mbps but under 8 Mbps, and ten per cent of the subscriptions had a transmission speed of 8 Mbps or higher.
