Revised industrial classification TOL 2008 will be adopted in these statistics starting from data concerning 2008

General

A revised industrial classification, TOL 2008, is being introduced in Finnish statistics in 2009. General information about the introduction can be found on the pages dedicated to TOL 2008. More detailed information about TOL 2008, including its contents and classification principles is available on the Classifications pages of the Metadata section of the website.

The new classification will be adopted in these statistics starting from data concerning 2008. The industrial classification is utilised for background information in the forming of a sample from which data are collected to supplement Statistics Finland's own data. Data concerning 2008 classified by the old TOL 2002 classification will be kept available in the database from which services are available from these statistics.

Changes caused by the introduction of TOL 2008

The industrial classification is used in these statistics to classify enterprises by industry. The classification dating from 2002 (TOL 2002) has been used in the past in the classification of data concerning 2002-2008. A revised version of the classification (TOL 2008), based on the European Union's industrial classification NACE Rev. 2, was introduced as of the beginning of 2009. Data concerning 2008 are classified by both TOL 2002 and TOL 2008.

Application of TOL 2008 in these statistics

These statistics cover the main categories and the 5-digit classes of the industrial classification in which activity exists in the private sector. Detailed descriptions of the classes can be found on Statistics Finland's web pages under Classifications.

Publishing of retrospective data by the TOL 2008 classification

Data will not be updated retrospectively by TOL 2008 in these statistics.

Use of data compiled by TOL 2008 and TOL 2002

During the transition background data according to both TOL 2002 and TOL 2008 are used in these statistics.

Data by more detailed levels of the old and new classifications can best be used together with the classification conversion key. Some of the old 5-digit level classes convert direct to new 5-digit level classes. The key shows the degree of correspondence. The key between TOL 2002 and TOL 2008 also shows the so-called star categories, i.e. the categories to which the majority of units in an old category move when it is split between several new categories. There are 285 of these star categories. The conversion key between TOL 2008 and TOL 2002 shows which old classes the new classes are comprised of.
