Total population of Finland at the end of 2017 was 5,513,130. Finland's population increased by 9,833 persons in 2017 from the year before. The growth was based entirely on immigration, as there was no natural population increase: the number of births was 3,401 lower than that of deaths last year. In 2017, the average age at first confinement was 29.2 years.
In 2017, the share of persons aged 84 or over in the population was 2.7 per cent, while at the beginning of the 2000s, their share was 1.5 per cent. At the end of 2017, the number of persons aged one hundred or over was 854; of them 723 were women and 131 men.
The average price for old dwellings in blocks of flats was EUR 3,718 per square metre in the Helsinki region in 2017. Unencumbered prices per square metre remained under EUR 1,600 in the rest of Finland. In the Helsinki region, the prices per square metre of old dwellings in blocks of flats rose by 3.5 per cent from the previous year, while in the rest of Finland they went up by 0.1 per cent.
In 2016, the average housing loan of household-dwelling units with a housing loan was EUR 97,215 per household-dwelling unit with a housing loan. In the same year, the average age of first-time homebuyers was 28.5 years.
Of employed persons, 33.6 per cent worked outside their municipality of residence in 2015. The average length of commuting was 14.1 km in 2015.
The number of registered passenger cars was 3.4 million in Finland in 2017. The average age of passenger cars in traffic was 12 years.
In 2017, the average price for a half kilogram packet of coffee was EUR 3.99, for a litre of low-fat milk EUR 0.99 and for a one kilogram bag of caster sugar EUR 0.88. In 2016, the corresponding prices were EUR 3.66 for a packet of coffee, EUR 1.01 for low-fat milk and EUR 0.89 for a bag of sugar.
Finland has a total of 11,365 protected areas and their area is 2.3 million hectares. In addition, the size of wilderness reserves is 1.5 million hectares. Finland has 19 strict nature reserves and 40 national parks, the newest one being Hossa.
In 2017, general government debt's share of GDP was 61.4 per cent in Finland, which is average for EU countries. Of EU countries, the indebtedness ratio was lowest in Estonia, 9.0 per cent, and highest in Greece, 178.6 per cent.
