New statistical service for road traffic accident data
A new free statistical service for road traffic accident data has been opened. The database service offers users new ways to examine road traffic accident data by means of charts and table selections, for example.
Statistics on road traffic accidents have been compiled in Finland since 1931. Over the years, various agencies have published statistical data. In recent years, Statistics Finland has published a statistical publication on road traffic accidents together with Liikenneturva. The now opened new statistical service based on PX-Web technology was produced in collaboration with Statistics Finland, Liikenneturva, the Finnish Transport Agency, the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Police, and the Finnish Transport Safety Agency (Trafi).
New service improves utilisation of data
The new statistical service contains database tables and browser charts. The database tables mainly comprise data corresponding to the statistical publication. They replace the paper publication and the Excel table package. In the browser charts and tables connected with them data can be viewed quickly in relation to pre-selected variables and browsing features.
The transfer to databases makes it possible to use more extensive classifications. It also allows users to select only the data that are interesting at that moment. Figures can be drawn from the tables, or data can be summed as needed. If wanted, the data can also be transferred to be processed on one's workstation in different file formats, e.g. Excel.
It is also possible to combine road traffic accident data with other data because users can choose whether to use classification codes or plain language names when downloading the data. For example, when choosing municipality codes, users can combine accident data on the municipality level to other statistical data obtainable on the municipality and thus make more exhaustive analyses.
Users can save all the charts they have generated and the static charts saved from the browser charts on their workstation and utilise them in their presentations, for instance. The PX-Web platform also enables automated inquiries utilising the interface, so that the desired data can be combined into one's own application. The platform also allows saved inquiries, which makes it possible for users to go back to the same view later. At the same time, a function can be added to the saved inquiry to follow updates.
Service is part of the statistics
The now opened service supplements the data available on road traffic accidents. The service is part of the statistical data offered on road traffic accidents in addition to Statistics Finland's publications, open personal injury/accident data and road traffic accident data published by other agencies.
Preliminary data concerning road traffic accidents for 2014 will be released on Statistics Finland's website and statistical service in June 2015. Final road traffic accident data for 2014 and open data for the geographical information dataset on road traffic accidents published in Statistics Finland's interface service and in the Paikkatietoikkuna will be released in December 2015. Final road traffic accident data for 2014 will then contain data on the seriousness of the injury for the first time.
