European Statistical System strengthens its role as support for decision-making

News

The European Statistical System ESS is a partnership comprising Eurostat and the National Statistical Institutes (NSIs) from the EU Member States and EFTA countries committed to producing and developing European statistics. The ESS has now prepared a common position on future data needs.

The lessons learned from the COVID-19 crisis and the changing global operating environment require innovation in producing statistics. New approaches, data sources and technologies, such as artificial intelligence, enable the development of statistics to correspond even better with present and future societal needs.

“An innovative approach to statistics also makes it possible to curb the costs of statistics compilation while the supply of data may even increase,” says Statistics Finland's Director General Markus Sovala.

The members of the ESS have defined the following key strategic goals concerning European statistics:

  • To retain the reliability and effectiveness of European statistics.
  • To innovate and enrich products and services while reducing the administrative burden on respondents.
  • To support enlargement countries in the accession path to the EU and strengthen international partnerships.

The ESS also aims to strengthen its role in promoting data literacy and combating disinformation across society. To achieve these goals, the ESS will focus on the commonly agreed strategic priorities.

The implementation of the common position will rely on enhanced cooperation among the ESS members, efficiency gains and targeted investments in infrastructure, skills and innovation. The ESS aims to remain a trusted and indispensable provider of high-quality statistics that serve the public good and inform the EU's democratic processes in a complex and data-driven world.
