According to Statistics Finland, altogether 1.6 million passengers flew through Finnish airports in June 2022. The number of passengers was six per cent higher than in the previous month. The number was multiple compared to one year earlier, but still only 67 per cent of the number of passengers in July 2019.

Key selections

  • Altogether 1,565,272 passengers flew through Finnish airports in July 2022.
  • The monthly number of passengers exceeded 1.5 million for the first time during the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Eighty-six per cent of the passengers were on international flights and 14 per cent on domestic flights.
  • The number of passengers was 67 per cent of the level in July 2019.

In July 2022, a total of 1.4 million passengers flew through Helsinki Airport and a total of 59,402 passengers flew through other domestic airports. Helsinki Airport accounted for 90 per cent of all passengers at domestic airports.

The number of passengers at Helsinki Airport was 34 per cent lower and the combined number of passengers at other domestic airports 31 per cent lower than in July 2019. Compared with July 2021, the number of passengers at both Helsinki Airport and other domestic airports was multiple times higher.

The exceptionally high relative growth in the number of passengers compared to last year is caused by the collapse of air traffic due to the COVID-19 pandemic starting from spring 2020. The year 2019 is used in the statistics as the comparison year to describe the number of air passengers before the pandemic.

Eighty-six per cent of the air traffic passengers were on international flights and 14 per cent on domestic flights. The share of passengers on international flights was 92 per cent at Helsinki Airport and 30 per cent in total at other domestic airports.

Air freight and mail transport totalled 12,414 tonnes in July 2022. In all, 99.8 per cent of the tonnes were transported through Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and 99 per cent in traffic between Finland and foreign countries. Altogether 6,770 tonnes (55%) of the transported volume of goods were outgoing and 5,645 tonnes (45%) were incoming.
