Share of enterprises with innovation activity close to 70 per cent and nearly one-fifth of enterprises had innovations with significant environmental benefits in 2018 to 2020

Nearly one fifth or 18 per cent of the enterprises included in the survey examining innovation activity reported innovations producing environmental benefits that were significant in terms of environmental protection between 2018 and 2020. The share was 25 per cent in industry and 13 per cent in service industries. In all, the share of enterprises with innovation activity was 69 per cent of the surveyed enterprises, which was higher than in the previous survey results. These data derive from an EU survey carried out by Statistics Finland concerning innovation activity among enterprises.

Key selections

The share of enterprises with innovation activity was higher than in the previous surveys, 69 per cent of all surveyed enterprises.
Implementation of process innovations was still the most common sub-area of innovation activity, 55 per cent of enterprises.
Nearly one-fifth of enterprises reported innovations having produced environmental benefits that were significant for environmental protection between 2018 and 2020.
The most commonly mentioned environmental benefits produced by innovations were reduced use of energy or a smaller CO2 footprint, i.e. reduced total CO2 emissions.
Nearly one-half, or 47 per cent, of the surveyed enterprises reported that their production and activities were digitalised on a permanent basis because of the coronavirus pandemic.
