Finland’s preliminary population figure was 5,552,550 at the end of June 2022
According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of June was 5,552,550. During January–June Finland's population increased by 4,309 persons. The reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 11,414 higher than that of emigrants. The number of births was 8,674 lower than that of deaths.
According to the preliminary statistics for January–June a total of 22,180 children were born, which is 2,453 fewer than in the corresponding period 2021. The number of deaths was 30,854 which is 3,166 higher than one year earlier.
Altogether 16,932 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 5,518 persons emigrated from Finland during January–June. The number of immigrants was 694 higher and the number of emigrants 48 higher than in the previous year. In all, 3,321 of the immigrants and 3,475 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 127,274 by the end of June. Compared with the previous year, the decrease was 7,132 migrations according to the municipal division of 2022.
According to preliminary data, 8,297 marriages were entered into during January–June, of which 8,111 were marriages of opposite-sex couples and 186 marriages of same-sex couples. Of the same-sex marriages, 126 were between two women and 60 between two men.
The population grew most in Uusimaa
According to preliminary data by region, the population grew in Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, Southwest Finland, Central Ostrobothnia, North Ostrobothnia and Åland between January–June of 2022.
The population grew most in absolute numbers in Uusimaa, where it grew by 8,440 persons. The next largest increase in population was seen in Pirkanmaa, 1,605 persons. Relative to the population, population growth was highest in Uusimaa, 4.9 per mil, in Pirkanmaa, 3.0 per mil, and in Central Ostrobothnia, 2.4 per mil.
Population loss was highest in absolute numbers in the region of Kymenlaakso that lost 880 persons of its population. The population of Lapland decreased by 767 persons, which was the second biggest population loss. Relative to the population, the biggest population loss was found in Kainuu, 6.1 per mil.
Most migration gain from intramunicipal and international migration was collected by Uusimaa, 7,072 persons and Pirkanmaa, 2,108 persons. Most migration gain in relative terms based on total net migration was also attained by Uusimaa, 4.1 per mil, and Pirkanmaa, 4.0 per mil.
In absolute numbers, migration loss from total net migration was biggest in the region of Lapland, 298 persons and Ostrobothnia, 237 persons. In relative terms, the biggest migration loss from total net migration was found in Lapland and South Karelia, in both 1.7 per mil of the population.
During January–June 2022, migration between regions numbered 55,893. The positive gain from migration between regions was seen in Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, Southwest Finland, Päijät-Häme, Kanta-Häme, South Savo, Central Ostrobothnia, South Ostrobothnia and Åland. In absolute numbers, the highest gain from migration between regions was received by Uusimaa, 1,409 persons. The relative migration gain was highest in Pirkanmaa, 2.3 per mil of the population.
Migration loss from migration between regions was biggest in absolute numbers in the region of Ostrobothnia, 700 persons. Migration loss from migration between regions was biggest in relative terms in the region of South Karelia, 4.1 per mil of the population.
