Domestic tourism reached record popularity in 2021

According to Statistics Finland’s data, the number of leisure trips with overnight stay in Finland increased in 2021 by nearly one third from the year before. Fewer trips abroad were made in 2021 than in 2020, even though travelling abroad picked up considerably in autumn 2021. In 2021, the total number of trips with overnight stay was 31.2 million, inclusive of leisure trips and business trips in Finland and abroad.

Key selections

  • In 2021, Finnish residents made 27.7 million leisure trips with overnight stay in Finland, which is eight per cent more than in 2019 before the pandemic.
  • Altogether 28.6 million domestic same-day leisure trips were made. The number is significantly higher than before the pandemic.
  • A total of 1.9 million leisure trips abroad were recorded in the statistics. This includes trips with overnight stay in the destination country, cruises and same-day trips.
  • The number of business trips with overnight stay both in Finland and abroad remained below the previous year's level.
  • Three out of four Finns made at least one leisure trip with overnight stay during 2021.
