Cubic volume of granted building permits decreased in the first quarter of 2023 year-on-year

According to Statistics Finland, building permits for newbuilding were granted in January to March 2023 for a total of 6.5 million cubic metres, which was 34 per cent less than one year ago. The cubic volume of building projects started decreased by 16 per cent and that of completed projects by eight per cent from one year back.

Cubic volume of building projects decreased in nearly all regions

In the first quarter of 2023, most building permits for newbuilding by volume and number of dwellings were granted in Uusimaa, Southwest Finland and Pirkanmaa. Among the regions, only the cubic volume of granted building projects in Kainuu and Åland grew from one year ago.

Measured by cubic volume, most building projects were completed in Uusimaa, Southwest Finland and North Ostrobothnia between January and March 2023. The growth compared to one year ago was biggest in North Ostrobothnia, Satakunta and North Savo.

On the level of the whole country, a total of 9,865 new dwellings were completed in building projects. Among the regions, most dwellings were completed in Uusimaa, where 5,106 dwellings were completed. Compared to one year ago, the biggest growth in the number of dwellings in completed building projects was seen in South Savo, Lapland and Uusimaa.
