According to Statistics Finland, around 2.6 million leisure trips abroad with overnight stay were made in May to August 2023, which is over 10 % more than in summer 2022. Estonia, Sweden, Greece and Spain were the most popular destinations.

Key selections

  • The total number of leisure trips with overnight stay in Finland and abroad in summer (May to August) 2023 was 12.3 million.
  • One in four leisure trips abroad were made to Southern Europe. More trips were also made to Sweden and Estonia than in the summer before.
  • A total of 9.7 million domestic leisure trips with overnight stay were made. The number was falling clearly for the second year in a row.
  • The decrease in domestic trips is due to dwindling of trips to visit friends or relatives and free-time residences. By contrast, the number of domestic leisure trips with paid accommodation remained almost unchanged.
