Leisure trips to Southern Europe recovered in autumn 2022

According to Statistics Finland, nearly 1.8 million leisure trips abroad with overnight stay were made in September to December 2022, which is significantly more than one year earlier. One third of the leisure trips abroad with overnight stay were made to Southern Europe, for which tourism returned to the pre-pandemic level. The number of domestic leisure trips with overnight stay decreased slightly from September to December 2021.

  • The total number of leisure trips with overnight stay in Finland and abroad in autumn (September to December) 2022 was 9.1 million.
  • In autumn 2022, the number of domestic leisure trips with overnight stay totalled around 7.3 million, which is 13 per cent fewer than one year earlier.
  • Altogether 2.0 million leisure trips abroad were made, when trips with overnight stay in the destination country, cruises and same-day trips are included.
  • The number of leisure trips to Estonia was still over one third lower in autumn 2022 than in autumn 2019 before the pandemic. By contrast, as many trips were made to Spain as before the pandemic.
  • The number of domestic business trips with overnight stay totalled 1.3 million. A total of 0.5 million business trips abroad with overnight stay were recorded in the statistics, which is nearly triple compared to autumn 2021.
