Altogether 15.6 million passengers flew through Finnish airports in 2022

According to Statistics Finland, a total of 15.6 million passengers flew through Finnish airports in 2022. The number of passengers is three times higher than the number of passengers in 2021. Despite the large growth percentage, the number of air passengers was over 10 million lower in 2022 than before the coronavirus pandemic in 2019. Seventy-eight per cent, or 12.2 million, travelled on international flights and 22 per cent, or 3.4 million, on domestic flights.

International passenger transport grew in 2022

The number of passengers in 2022 was three times higher than in 2021. Compared to the time prior to the corona pandemic, 2019, there were still over 10 million fewer passengers. Compared to the previous two years, the relative share of international transport has returned to the level prior to the corona pandemic and 78 per cent of passengers, or 12.2 million, flew in international transport and 22 per cent, or 3.4 million passengers in domestic transport.

The growth in international air travel was visible in both scheduled and charter flights. In 2022, altogether 14.7 million passengers travelled on international scheduled flights and 0.9 million on international charter flights. The number of passengers on scheduled flights was 41 per cent lower and on charter flights 27 per cent lower than in 2019.

In all, 13.0 million passengers flew through Helsinki Airport and a total of 2.6 million passengers through other domestic airports. Helsinki Airport accounted for 83 per cent of all passengers at domestic airports.

The volume of freight and mail transport by air decreased by four per cent compared to 2021. Freight and mail transport amounted to 172,741 tonnes in total, and 99 per cent of the tonnes were transported through Helsinki Airport. Ninety-nine per cent of the freight tonnes were transported between Finland and foreign countries. Altogether 94,151 tonnes of the transported volume of goods were outgoing and 78,591 tonnes were incoming freight.
