Fewer open job vacancies in the last quarter of 2022 than one year earlier

According to Statistics Finland, there were 50,300 open job vacancies in the last quarter of 2022, while the figure was 59,100 one year earlier. The data describe the situation on the first day of December.

Characteristics of job vacancies

In the last quarter of 2022, altogether 36,700 or 73 per cent of the job vacancies were in establishments owned by private enterprises. Open job vacancies decreased slightly in the private sector compared to one year earlier. The number of open job vacancies decreased in Helsinki-Uusimaa (-6,400) and Western Finland (-3,200) and grew or remained more or less unchanged in the other major regions.

Examined by the industry of the establishment, changes from one year ago were moderate, but open job vacancies grew somewhat in manufacturing industries (B to E). The number of open job vacancies decreased in the industry groups of trade, transportation and storage, accommodation and food service activities (G to I), and professional, scientific and technical activities, administrative and support service activities (M to N), for example.

In the last quarter, 29 per cent of all job vacancies were fixed-term, which share was almost the same as in the corresponding period of the year before. The share of part-time jobs in all open job vacancies was 15 per cent, which is also similar to the corresponding period in 2021.

Employers estimated that 57 per cent of the open job vacancies were hard-to-fill, while the corresponding share was 58 per cent one year earlier. For example, there were still plenty of jobs considered hard to fill in establishments of human health and social work activities (Q) in the tasks of practical nurses and registered nurses and in establishments of construction (F) in the tasks of fitters.
