Read more about the changeAccording to Statistics Finland, age-standardised mortality increased by 7.7 per cent in 2022 from the previous year. The growth in mortality was particularly due to increased mortality from the coronavirus disease. A total of 4,349 persons died of the coronavirus disease, which is nearly seven per cent of deaths. Mortality also grew from memory disorders and cardiovascular diseases. By contrast, mortality decreased from the previous year from neoplasms, accidents and suicides.

- Altogether 4,349 persons died of the coronavirus disease. The median age of those who died from the disease was 87 years.
- A total of 19,500 died of diseases of the circulatory system and 12,300 died of memory diseases, which was 1,600 more than in 2021.
- Neoplasm mortality decreased by 2.1 per cent from the previous year.
- There were nearly the same number of deaths from alcohol-related causes as in the year before.
- The number of deaths from suicides and accidents did not grow from 2021.
