Consumption of hard coal decreased by 11 per cent in January to March 2023

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, the consumption of hard coal decreased by 11 per cent in January to March 2023 compared to the previous year. The consumption of hard coal as fuel in the generation of electricity and heat and in manufacturing amounted to 620 thousand tonnes, corresponding to 15.6 petajoules in energy content. In January to March, 56 per cent less hard coal was consumed than on average in the 2000s.

In the first quarter of 2023, a total of 620 thousand tonnes of hard coal was consumed as fuel in the generation of electricity and heat and in manufacturing, which is 11 per cent less than one year earlier.
The consumption of hard coal decreased in the first quarter of 2023 after increasing in the past two years.
In the long term, the trend of hard coal consumption is declining and in January to March 2023, altogether 56 per cent less hard coal was consumed than on average in the 2000s.
Consumption of hard coal decreased by 17 per cent in January and by 14 per cent in February from the corresponding periods of the year before. In March, consumption remained on level with the previous year.
The stocks of hard coal amounted to 1,297 thousand tonnes at the end of March, which was 64 per cent more than one year earlier.
