Net immigration of Finnish citizens turned again negative in 2021 and 2022

According to Statistics Finland, the net immigration of adult Finnish citizens was 1,632 persons negative in 2022. Net immigration has decreased in all educational groups since the rise in 2019 to 2020. The net immigration loss was biggest for those with upper secondary level qualifications in 2022. Net immigration remained positive only among completers of comprehensive school.

The chart shows the net immigration of Finnish adult citizens by level of education in 2005 to 2022. In 2005 to 2011, net immigration as a whole has been slightly negative, ranging from around -150 to -1,600 moves. The net immigration loss started to strengthen in 2011, being as many as 3,900 moves negative in 2016. After this, the loss has decreased and in 2020 net immigration was slightly positive. In 2021 and 2022, migration gain turned again slightly negative. Throughout the period, migration gain has been the most negative among adult Finnish citizens with upper secondary level education. Correspondingly, net immigration has been highest throughout the whole period for those adult Finnish citizens who do not have a post-comprehensive level qualification.
