Birth rate lowest among women of Finnish background in 2022

According to Statistics Finland, the total fertility rate of women with Finnish background was 1.29 and that of women of foreign background 1.51 in 2022. The birth rate went down from the previous year in all origin groups. During the pandemic, the birth rate rose slightly but only for women of Finnish background.

Throughout the entire period, individuals with a foreign background born abroad have exhibited the highest fertility rates. Similarly high fertility rates have been observed among individuals with a foreign background overall. The total fertility rate for individuals with a Finnish background has been consistently lower throughout the entire time frame. In 2022, the total fertility rate for individuals with a Finnish background had decreased to 1.29, for those with a foreign background to 1.51, and for foreign-born individuals with a foreign background to 1.56 children per woman.
