Fewer deaths from corona than in the previous year — still 2,200 deaths in 2023

According to Statistics Finland, mortality decreased by 4.2 per cent in 2023 from the previous year. In addition to the coronavirus disease, mortality from diseases of the circulatory system and memory disorders decreased. Nearly four per cent of deaths were still caused by the coronavirus disease. The number of persons who died of neoplasms, diseases of the respiratory system and accidents grew slightly from the year before. Mortality caused by alcohol also increased.

  • A total of 13,900 persons died of neoplasms. This is nearly 400 more than in 2022.
  • Over 1,700 persons died from alcohol-related causes. Alcohol mortality increased by 1.8 per cent from 2022.
