According to Statistics Finland, general government EDP debt, i.e. consolidated gross debt at nominal prices amounted to EUR 210.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2023 and grew by EUR 4.8 billion during the quarter. Relative to GDP, general government debt stood at 75.8 per cent. General government debt grew by EUR 13.7 billion compared to the respective period of the year before.

Central government debt grew by EUR 2.9 billion

During the fourth quarter, central government debt grew by EUR 2.9 billion and was EUR 175.2 billion at the end of the quarter. The stock of long-term bonds increased by EUR 2.4 billion and the stock of short-term debt instruments with a maturity of under one year remained unchanged compared to the previous quarter. The stock of short-term loans increased by EUR 1.4 billion and the stock of long-term loans decreased by EUR 0.7 billion.

Local government sector’s debt increased by EUR 0.9 billion

The local government sector was reformed at the beginning of 2023, when the wellbeing services counties started their actual activity. From the first quarter of 2023 onwards, the sector will include data on the wellbeing services counties in addition to other local government units. The renewed local government sector's debt increased by EUR 0.9 billion during the fourth quarter of 2023 totalling to EUR 35.3 billion at the end of the quarter. The local government sector’s stock of long-term loans grew by EUR 0.4 billion during the quarter and was EUR 32.2 billion at the end of the fourth quarter.

Social security funds' debt increased by EUR 0.8 billion

Social security funds' debt grew by EUR 0.8 billion, mainly due to an increase in short-term loans and stood at EUR 2.7 billion at the end of the fourth quarter of 2023.
