Number of trips in passenger traffic by rail grew by 3 per cent in 2024

According to Statistics Finland, 84.6 million trips in passenger traffic were made and 26.6 million tonnes of freight were transported by Finnish rail in 2024. The number of trips in passenger traffic grew by three per cent compared to the previous year but the volume of freight transport decreased by two per cent.

  • In 2024, altogether 2.2 million more trips in passenger traffic by rail were made than in 2023. The number of passengers in local traffic increased by three per cent and that in long-distance traffic by one per cent.
  • The transport performance of freight transport totalled 8.2 billion tonne-kilometres, which was five per cent more than in 2023.
  • Four persons died in railway accidents and one person was seriously injured. The number of deaths remained unchanged but the number of seriously injured was two lower than in the previous year.
  • The share of the electric tractive stock in train-kilometres rose to 91 per cent. The train-kilometres of electric locomotives and electric railcars both grew by four per cent from the previous year.
