Number of trips abroad decreased slightly from the previous year in summer 2025

According to Statistics Finland, around 2.5 million leisure trips abroad with overnight stay were made in May to August 2025, which is slightly fewer than in the previous year. The number of domestic leisure trips with overnight stay decreased from the previous summer by about one fifth to 8.9 million trips.

Key selections

  • Altogether 2.8 million leisure trips abroad were made in summer (May to August) 2025, when trips with overnight stay in the destination country, same-day trips and cruises are included.
  • Around half, or 1.5 million, of the leisure trips abroad were made to the Nordic countries or Estonia. The popularity of Southern Europe decreased slightly from the previous summer.
  • The number of domestic leisure trips with paid accommodation was 2.8 million, which is close on one tenth fewer than in the year before.
  • The number of trips with free accommodation at relatives' and friends' places and at own free-time residences decreased considerably. These trips numbered 6.1 million, or one fifth fewer than in summer 2024.
