Share of fossil-free electricity production rose to 95 per cent in 2024
Release related to topics:Energy
release | Production of electricity and heat 2024According to Statistics Finland, 79.9 TWh of electricity was produced in Finland in 2024, of which 57 per cent was produced with renewable energy sources. Production grew by two per cent compared to the previous year. The share of fossil-free electricity production, that is, electricity produced with renewable energy sources and nuclear power rose to 95 per cent. The production of district heat fell by three per cent and that of industrial heat remained on level with the previous year.

Key selections
- Of total electricity consumption, 96 per cent was covered by domestic production and four per cent by net imports of electricity.
- Fifty-seven per cent of electricity production in Finland was produced with renewable energy sources. The majority of renewable electricity was produced with wind power, hydro power and wood-based fuels.
- For the first time in Finland, wind power was the second biggest mode of electricity production after nuclear power. As much as one-quarter of electricity production was produced with wind power in 2024.
- The volumes of electricity produced with nuclear and hydro power and by burning fuels fell. Nevertheless, the share of fossil-free electricity production rose to 95 per cent.
- The production of district heat fell by three per cent in 2024. In the production of district heat, the production of electric boilers rose by 120 per cent in 2024, being 1.6 TWh.
