Increase in the number of persons living alone slowed down in 2024

release | Dwellings and housing conditions 2024According to Statistics Finland, the number of persons living alone was 1.34 million at the end of 2024, being 8,400 more than one year ago. However, the growth in people living alone was smaller than in earlier years. The number of household-dwelling units with at least two persons grew almost as much. There were altogether 2,861,000 household-dwelling units at the end of 2024. The growth in the total number was lower than usual in recent years.

- In 2024, the number of household-dwelling units of persons aged under 30 decreased by 7,800 from the previous year, the number of middle-aged and older household-dwelling units increased.
- The number of household-dwelling units living in overcrowded conditions grew for the second year in a row.
- Forty-seven per cent of household-dwelling units were living alone, 32 per cent were two-person households and 21 per cent were household-dwelling units of at least three persons.
- The number of household-dwelling units living in blocks of flats grew most, by 19,000. The number of household-dwelling units living in one-dwelling and two-dwelling houses went down by around 2,000.
