General government debt fell by EUR 3.6 billion third quarter of 2025

National economyAccording to Statistics Finland, general government EDP debt, i.e. consolidated gross debt at nominal prices amounted to EUR 242.4 billion in the third quarter of 2025 and fell by EUR 3.6 billion during the quarter. Relative to GDP, general government debt stood at 86.6 per cent. General government debt grew by EUR 17.0 billion compared to the respective period of the year before.

During the third quarter, central government debt fell by EUR 2.5 billion and was EUR 203.8 billion at the end of the quarter. The stock of long-term bonds decreased by EUR 4.0 billion and the stock of short-term debt instruments with a maturity of under one year increased by EUR 1.6 billion. The stock of short-term loans remained unchanged and the stock of long-term loans decreased by EUR 0.2 billion.
The local government sector’s debt increased by EUR 0.1 billion
The local government sector's debt increased by EUR 0.1 billion during the third quarter of 2025, totalling EUR 38.6 billion at the end of the quarter. The local government sector’s stock of long-term loans grew by EUR 0.2 billion during the quarter and was EUR 35.9 billion at the end of the third quarter.
Social security funds' debt decreased by EUR 1.1 billion
Social security funds' debt decreased by EUR 1.1 billion, mainly due to a decrease in short-term loans and stood at EUR 2.0 billion at the end of the third quarter of 2025.
