Number of household-dwelling units living in rented dwellings increased slightly in 2024

release | Dwellings and housing conditions 2024According to Statistics Finland, altogether 1.03 million household-dwelling units lived in rented dwellings at the end of 2024. That is 10,000 more than at the end of the previous year. The number of household-dwelling units living in owner-occupied dwellings increased five thousand. At the end of 2024, altogether 3.7 million persons lived in owner-occupied dwellings. Significantly fewer lived in rented dwellings, 1.6 million people.

- At the end of 2024, eighty-three per cent of young people's household-dwelling units lived in rented dwellings. Thirty-six per cent of household-dwelling units in which the oldest person was aged 30 to 59 lived in rented dwellings. When the oldest person was at least 60 years old, 21 per cent of household-dwelling units lived in rented dwellings.
- The number of household-dwelling units living in a rented dwelling has grown by five percentage points in ten years compared to 2014. Living in a rented dwelling has increased most among young people's household-dwelling units, by eight percentage points.
- The majority of household-dwelling units living in rented dwellings lived in large towns. Over one-half of all household-dwelling units living in rented dwellings were living in the ten largest towns at the end of 2024.
- The number of household-dwelling units living in right of occupancy dwellings, 53,000, remained almost unchanged from the previous year.
- Forty-six per cent of one-person households lived in owner-occupied dwellings, 73 per cent of two-person households and 77 per cent of household-dwelling units with at least three persons lived in owner-occupied dwellings at the end of 2024.
