Road traffic accidents claimed 16 lives in May 2026

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, 222 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in May 2026. In them, 16 persons were killed and 273 persons injured. The number of fatalities was seven lower and the number of persons injured 10 higher than in May 2025. The data were compared with the previous year's preliminary data.

Road traffic accidents in January to May

According to preliminary data, there were a total of 824 road traffic accidents involving personal injury in the January to May period of 2026. In them, 57 persons were killed and 1,051 persons injured. The number of deaths was eight lower and the number of persons injured 65 higher than in the corresponding period of 2025.

Of the persons who were killed, 36 travelled by passenger car, two by van, one by moped and four by motorcycle. Eight pedestrians and two cyclists on an electric bicycle were killed. In addition, four other road users were killed.
