Road traffic accidents claimed 20 lives in August 2026
releaseAccording to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, 259 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in August 2026. In them, 20 persons were killed and 332 persons injured. The number of fatalities was two higher and the number of persons injured 15 higher than in August 2025. The data were compared with the previous year's preliminary data.

Road traffic accidents in January to August
According to preliminary data, there were a total of 1,579 road traffic accidents involving personal injury in the January to August period of 2026. In them, 116 persons were killed and 2,003 persons injured. The number of deaths was two lower and the number of persons injured six higher than in the corresponding period of 2025. Of the persons who were killed, 65 travelled by passenger car, three by van, two by moped, 14 by motorcycle and one by lorry. 15 pedestrians and two riders of a light electric vehicles were killed. One cyclist on a traditional bicycle and five cyclists on an electric bicycle were killed. In addition, eight other road users were killed.
