The traffic performance decreased by 14 per cent in 2025.
Key selections
- In 2025, the volume of transported goods decreased by 30 million tonnes (13%) and the transport performance fell by 1.800 million tonne-kilometres (7%) compared to the previous year.
- The transport performance of vehicle combinations of more than 68 tonnes decreased by 16 per cent and traffic performance by 17 per cent in 2025.
- Ninety-six per cent of the transport volume was transported in professional transport and four per cent in private transport.
- The transport volume of soil decreased by 16 per cent measured in the volume of goods, that is, in tonnes, and by 8 per cent measured as transport performance, that is, in tonne-kilometres.
Domestic transport
In 2025, a total of 200 million tonnes of goods were transported in domestic road transport, which is down by 13 per cent from 2024. The transport performance decreased by 7 per cent and amounted to 24 billion tonne-kilometres.
The volume of goods transported in professional or licensed transport decreased by 10 per cent in 2025, and the transport performance fell by 6 per cent. The share of professional transport in total volume of goods transported grew by three percentage points and was 93 per cent. The share of the transport performance was 96 per cent of all domestic goods transport.
Transported tonnage of large vehicle combinations of more than 68 tonnes decreased
In 2025, the volume of goods transported by vehicle combinations of more than 68 tonnes totalled 83 million tonnes, which was 13 per cent less than in 2024. The transport performance decreased by 16 per cent and amounted to 10 billion tonne-kilometres.
The share of volume of goods transported by vehicle combinations of over 68 tonnes has been growing steadily for the lenght of time series.
The share of tonnes transported by vehicle combinations of more than 68 tonnes did not change from the previous year. The share of large goods transported in the transport performance decreased by four percentage points compared to 2024 and was 41 per cent.
Transport by type of goods
Examined by type of goods, the biggest transported type of goods in 2025 was soil, such as gravel, sand, stone and other soil, salt, fertiliser minerals, slag, ash and peat. In this type of goods, the volume of transported goods decreased by 10 million tonnes (16%) and transport performance by 174 million tonne-kilometres (9%). Soil made up 27 per cent of all transported volume of goods, retaining its position as the biggest type of goods.
Significant decreases in the volume of goods were also seen in other types of goods. For example, the volume of goods transported in the type of goods “Paper, paperboard, printed matter, other products of paper and paperboard” decreased by 2.4 million tonnes (49%). The transport volume of sawdust and chips also decreased significantly, by 4.7 million tonnes (46%) compared to the previous year.
On the other hand, the transport volumes of some types of goods increased considerably. The volume of transported goods of sawdust and chips grew by 0.8 million tonnes (36%) and the volume of transported goods of "Beverages, non-alcoholic beverages, beer, wine, alcoholic beverages" type of goods rose by 0.5 million tonnes (54%) compared to one year earlier.
Measured by the transport performance, the biggest groups of goods were:
- Saw timber and pulpwood
- Different types of goods that are transported simultaneously
- Gravel, sand, stone and other soil, salt, fertiliser minerals, slag, ash and peat
These types of goods were transported for a total of over two billion tonne-kilometres. Their transport performance totalled eight billion tonne-kilometres, which represented 32 per cent of all tonne-kilometres transported.
International transport
In 2025, the volume of goods transported by domestic lorries in international transport was 2.2 million tonnes, which was 34 per cent less than in 2024. The transport performance amounted to EUR 1.5 billion, which was 18 per cent less than in 2024.
