General government debt grew by EUR 4.8 billion second quarter of 2026

According to Statistics Finland, general government EDP debt, i.e. consolidated gross debt at nominal prices amounted to EUR 259.6 billion in the second quarter of 2026 and grew by EUR 4.8 billion during the quarter. Relative to GDP, general government debt stood at 90.3 per cent. General government debt grew by EUR 13.6 billion compared to the respective period of the year before.

Central government debt grew by EUR 4.0 billion

During the second quarter, central government debt grew by EUR 4.0 billion and was EUR 220.2 billion at the end of the quarter. The stock of long-term bonds increased by EUR 3.1 billion and the stock of short-term debt instruments with a maturity of under one year increased by EUR 1.4 billion. The stock of short-term loans decreased by EUR 0.1 billion and the stock of long-term loans decreased by EUR 0.5 billion.

The local government sector’s debt increased by EUR 0.6 billion

The local government sector's debt increased by EUR 0.6 billion during the second quarter of 2026, totalling EUR 39.7 billion at the end of the quarter. The local government sector’s stock of long-term loans grew by EUR 0.4 billion during the quarter and was EUR 36.8 billion at the end of the second quarter.

Social security funds' debt decreased by EUR 0.1 billion

Social security funds' debt decreased by EUR 0.1 billion, mainly due to a decrease in short-term debt securities and stood at EUR 1.2 billion at the end of the second quarter of 2026.
