Cubic volume of granted building permits increased by 11 per cent in March 2026 from one year back
releaseAccording to Statistics Finland, the annual cubic volume of construction actions having been granted a building permit for newbuilding increased by eleven per cent in March 2026 from one year ago. Building permits were granted for a total of 33 million cubic metres between April 2025 and March 2026. Over the period, building projects totalling 29 million cubic metres were completed, which was 6 per cent up from one year earlier.

- In March 2026, the annual cubic volume of building permits granted for residential buildings decreased by seven per cent. The cubic volume of other than residential building construction went up by 15 per cent.
- Building permits were granted for a total of 16,322 dwellings, which was 16 per cent less than one year earlier.
- The trend of the volume index of newbuilding, which describes the constant-price value of ongoing building production, was one per cent higher in March 2026 than one year earlier.
- The moving annual total of cubic volume of building projects started remained at the same level as one year earlier.
- The data on building projects started in the latest 24 months are estimated values, and they will become revised most during around 12 months from the first release.
Cubic volume covered by granted building permits was bigger than one year ago in twelve regions
The annual total cubic volume of building permits granted for newbuilding was highest in Uusimaa and Pirkanmaa in March 2026. The cubic volume was bigger than one year earlier in twelve regions.
The annual total of the cubic volume of completed building projects was highest in Uusimaa and North Ostrobothnia in March 2026. The cubic volume went up in thirteen regions.
In the whole country, the annual total of new dwellings completed at building sites was 20,278 in March 2026, which was at the same level as one year earlier. Among the regions, most dwellings were completed in Uusimaa, 9,229. Compared to the previous year, the number of completed new dwellings increased in twelve regions.
