Cubic volume of granted building permits increased by 9 per cent in May 2026 from one year back
releaseAccording to Statistics Finland, the annual cubic volume of construction actions having been granted a building permit for newbuilding increased by nine per cent in May 2026 from one year ago. Building permits were granted for a total of 33 million cubic metres between June 2025 and May 2026. Over the period, building projects totalling 28 million cubic metres were completed, which was the same volume as one year earlier.

- In May 2026, the annual cubic volume of building permits granted for residential buildings decreased by 12 per cent. The cubic volume of other than residential building construction went up by 15 per cent.
- Building permits were granted for a total of 15,941 dwellings, which was 16 per cent less than one year earlier.

Cubic volume covered by granted building permits was bigger than one year ago in twelve regions
The annual total cubic volume of building permits granted for newbuilding was highest in Uusimaa and Southwest Finland in May 2026. The cubic volume was bigger than one year earlier in twelve regions.
The annual total of the cubic volume of completed building projects was highest in Uusimaa and Pirkanmaa in May 2026. The cubic volume went up in nine regions.
In the whole country, the annual total of new dwellings completed at building sites was 20,640 in May 2026, which was four per cent higher than one year earlier. Among the regions, most dwellings were completed in Uusimaa, 9,697. Compared to the previous year, the number of completed new dwellings increased in nine regions.
