Cubic volume of granted building permits increased by 16 per cent in July 2026 from one year back
releaseAccording to Statistics Finland, the annual cubic volume of construction actions having been granted a building permit for newbuilding increased by 16 per cent in July 2026 from one year ago. Building permits were granted for a total of 36 million cubic metres between August 2025 and July 2026. Over the period, building projects totalling nearly 28 million cubic metres were completed, which was 4 per cent down from one year earlier.

- In July 2026, the annual cubic volume of building permits granted for residential buildings decreased by 12 per cent. The cubic volume of other than residential building construction went up by 22 per cent.
- The increase in the volume of granted building permits is mainly attributable to information and communications technology buildings, which include data centres and IT areas.
- Building permits were granted for a total of 15,537 dwellings, which was 16 per cent less than one year earlier.
- The trend of the volume index of newbuilding, which describes the constant-price value of ongoing building production, was one per cent lower in July 2026 than one year earlier.
- The moving annual total of cubic volume of building projects started was seven per cent lower than one year earlier.
Cubic volume covered by granted building permits was bigger than one year ago in thirteen regions
The annual total cubic volume of building permits granted for newbuilding was highest in Uusimaa and North Ostrobothnia in July 2026. The cubic volume was bigger than one year earlier in thirteen regions.
The annual total of the cubic volume of completed building projects was highest in Uusimaa and Pirkanmaa in July 2026. The cubic volume went up in eleven regions.
In the whole country, the annual total of new dwellings completed at building sites was 20,031 in July 2026, which was one per cent higher than one year earlier. Among the regions, most dwellings were completed in Uusimaa, 9,226. Compared to the previous year, the number of completed new dwellings increased in nine regions.
